The athletes I talk to insist that they know how to eat. Within the same conversation, they can't tell me why they eat protein shakes, or give me an example of a food that is good for post workout. It's what I like to call an awkward silence. Suddenly the athlete knows that I know that he doesn't know. He knows he could use some help, but he feels embarrassed. Well, get over it and get educated. Knowledge is power, and power translates to winning. The popular phrase "just fake it" is about as stupid a philosophy as you could follow. I like Guy Mezger's view. He tells his students, "You can't hide what you don't know." When you step into the cage, there's no faking it. What you are is what people will see. You can't fake being well-trained. You can't fake cardiovascular conditioning. You can't fake months of proper eating.
When you are 18, you can get away with a lot. Lack of sleep, junk diet, sloppy training. When you are 25, you can still get away with some of that. When you are 30, you can't cut corners anymore. By then, you have spent all of your years teaching your body bad habits. It will be too late. If you want to stay in the game, you have to do it right. All of it. Fuel to train, and then train hard.
Get educated about your diet.
