A research article that was just published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research looked specifically at martial arts training and its ability to enhance the antioxidant system of the body. This is great because we need more research that looks at the health effects of martial arts training. We know that exercise produces free radicals (which are BAD) in the body and that the body produces antioxidants (which are GOOD) to help protect against free radical damage. Lots of research has looked at supplementation of various antioxidants to reduce or limit damage caused by free radicals, but little research has looked at exercise as a way to reduce damage. To quote from the article,
"There is a paradox between acute exercise increasing oxidative stress and regular exercise having a protective and beneficial effect on health."
Thus the need for more research!! Guy Mezger is constantly talking about how martial arts is not just a sport, but rather, a way of life. It is training for the body, the mind, and the spirit. You live and breathe everything you are taught. Intuitively, it is known that there are benefits to lifestyle exercise. The research can put it into measurable terms.
