Gracie Diet: Thumbs up!

Had a reader ask Rudog what I thought about a particular diet that has been around in the MMA community for a long time, the Gracie Diet. I don't have any clients that follow this and I don't know anyone who has, so admittedly I have not worked with this diet in detail. It looks like the diet is more of a style of eating, based on several basic principles:
  1. Keeping the pH of the diet neutral by using specific combinations of foods
  2. Emphasizing fruits and vegetables as the bulk of the diet
  3. Using high quality protein, but no pork
  4. Staying away from processed foods....including canned and commercially prepared breads.
  5. Drink water
Nutritionally there doesn't seem to be any food groups missing or any one food group emphasized over another. That's great! The main emphasis is on keeping the diet neutral through the proper combination of foods, and that may prove tedious for some. However, for others, this level of commitment may be what makes this diet attractive. It represents the additional discipline that is so essential to the training regimen of the MMA fighter. As long as the caloric intake is adequate for the training demands of the fighter, I see know problems with this one. It looks pretty darn good!
