Most liners in cans (and some plastic bottles) contain Bisphenol A (BPA). This is why you are seeing the move away from bottled water and plastic sports bottles. Studies are beginning to suggest that there could be increases in the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Now canned soups are being looked at. Some of the highest levels of BPA have turned up in soups and other canned items. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking at the issue but has yet to make a decisions as to what levels of BPA are considered safe. In the mean time, if you want to limit your exposure to BPA you could use less plastic bottles and look for soups in cartons or cups. Aseptically packaged soups in cartons can have a shelf life of 9 to 12 months.
